If you have looked into design as a career, you have probably met two versions of it. One says it is a creative field for people who are good at art. The other says it is a tech job with a high salary and a shortage of qualified people.
Both are somewhat out of date. Here is what the evidence actually shows, including the parts that are uncomfortable, because you are making a decision about the next four to six years and you deserve the real picture.
What the job actually is
UX design — user experience design — is the work of deciding how a product behaves before anyone builds it. Not what it looks like, though that comes into it. What happens when you tap the button. What the screen shows when you have no data yet. What the error message says when something fails.
The Nielsen Norman Group, which is the field’s most established research organisation, surveyed 693 practitioners across 65 countries about what they actually spend their time on. Around 90% do qualitative usability testing, heuristic reviews, user journeys, flows and storyboarding, prototyping, and working with subject-matter experts. Some things people associate with the field are rare: 71% have never run a diary study.
Notice what dominates that list. Testing, reviewing, mapping, working with other people. It is a research-and-judgement job with a visual component, not a visual job with some research attached.
One more finding from that survey is worth knowing before you start planning a title for yourself: respondents reported 134 distinct job titles. UX designer, product designer, interaction designer, experience designer, UX engineer, and a hundred others. The work overlaps heavily and the labels do not mean the same thing at any two companies.
The two doors, and why you have to pick one by about grade 11
This is the practical thing most career articles never mention, and it will affect what you study over the next two years.
There are two very different university routes into this field, and they want opposite things from applicants.
The design school route. Carnegie Mellon’s School of Design requires a portfolio for its BDes programme: 10 to 18 slides of your strongest 2D and 3D work — drawing, painting, mixed-media, sculpture, and still or animated digital work — chosen to show “how you explore ideas, make decisions, and develop your creative process.” Plus a 90-second video and a design-specific essay.
Read that again as a timeline. A portfolio of 10 to 18 pieces, submitted in grade 12, means the work starts in grade 9, 10 or 11. There is no way to assemble it in a final-year sprint.
The engineering route. The University of Washington’s Human Centered Design and Engineering programme states plainly: “No, HCDE does not accept portfolios or sample work.” What it wants instead is the calculus sequence, a computer science course, statistics, three science courses and English composition — all completed by the application deadline.
Same career at the end. Completely opposite preparation.
If you are in grade 9 or 10, you do not have to choose yet, but you should know both doors exist. If you are in grade 11, this is the decision, and it is mostly a question of whether you would rather spend two years making things or two years doing mathematics. Neither answer is better. They produce different designers, and the field needs both.
Does it pay?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks the closest official equivalent under “Web and Digital Interface Designers.” In the May 2025 data, the median annual wage is $104,000, across 113,330 people. The mean for the same group is $117,490 — and when the mean sits that far above the median, it tells you the top of the range is pulling hard.
For comparison, median annual wages from the same release: web developers $92,650, graphic designers $62,960, software developers $135,980.
A word about medians, because these numbers get quoted carelessly. A median is the middle of a very wide range, and you do not start in the middle. The UXPA salary survey — smaller and self-selected, so treat it loosely — put designers with 0–2 years of experience at around $75,000 and those with 21+ years at $162,000. Location, industry and company size move it enormously.
The honest part about hiring
Here is where a lot of career content stops being useful, so this section is deliberately blunt.
The occupation is growing slowly. BLS projects 5% growth for web developers and digital designers over 2025–2035. That reads as “faster than average” only because total US employment is projected to grow just 3.5% over the same decade. Graphic design, by contrast, is projected to decline by 2%, and BLS says directly that automated design tools including AI “are projected to make graphic designers more productive and reduce the need for these workers.”
Entry level is the hardest part of the market. Nielsen Norman Group’s State of UX 2026 report found that while the job market began stabilising through 2025, “senior practitioners and generalist roles are recovering faster than entry-level positions, which remain scarce and highly competitive,” and expects the supply of aspiring UX professionals to keep outpacing open roles at junior level. In User Interviews’ 2025 State of User Research survey of 1,906 practitioners, only 16% felt positive about the available job opportunities and career growth in the field.
There is a real signal about young workers and AI, and it is not design-specific. Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab, using payroll data through June 2026, found workers aged 22–25 in highly AI-exposed occupations sitting roughly 19% below where employment would be had it tracked similarly-aged workers in less exposed jobs. The authors are careful, and so should anyone quoting them be: these are descriptive patterns, not causal estimates, and the gaps narrow when education is accounted for.
And one genuinely positive number. NACE’s spring 2026 survey of employers projects a 5.6% increase in entry-level hiring for the class of 2026, after two poor years.
Those findings do not resolve neatly, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The fair summary: this is a real profession that pays well, it is not a boom field, the bottom rung is the hardest part, and nobody can tell you what it looks like in 2032.
What is clear is which parts of the work are exposed. Nielsen Norman Group’s own analysis puts mockup production, spec writing and UI polish in the most automatable category — historically the exact tasks juniors were hired to do. The durable parts are product vision, user flows, stakeholder alignment, systems thinking and critical judgement.
That is a hard message for a 22-year-old. It is a genuinely good one for a 16-year-old, because judgement, research skill and the ability to explain your thinking are exactly what you have six years to build, and they are not what a design degree alone gives you.
You do not need a design degree
A useful counterweight to all the portfolio anxiety above.
In the Nielsen Norman Group careers survey, 82% of respondents held a university degree of some kind — but of those working specifically as designers, only 42% had a degree in a traditional design subject. Among UX researchers, 23% had come from sociology or psychology. Only 35% had taken a UX-related university programme at all.
The report’s own conclusion: “You can get into user experience no matter what your educational background is.” One hiring manager quoted in it said they would rather hire someone bright and hard-working without a design degree than a credentialled graduate who is ego-driven.
That data is from 2019 and predates both the recent downturn and generative AI, so it is context rather than a promise. But it holds up against the structure of the field: the work rewards people who can research, reason and communicate, and those skills are taught in a lot of places.
What a portfolio is actually for
If you do build one — and you should, whichever door you go through — it is worth understanding what it is for, because most student portfolios get this wrong.
It is not a gallery. Nielsen Norman Group’s guidance, based on work with over 200 hiring managers, suggests choosing three to five projects as detailed case studies, each covering: the problem, your specific role and who you worked with, how you developed solutions, how the solution addressed the problem, the challenges and the ideas you rejected, the impact, and what you learned.
The quotes from hiring managers in that research are the useful part. “Show me how you started with an opportunity and produced real value.” And: “I want to see the messy process and all the work and research.” As the guidance puts it — the final screenshots only tell part of the story.
One more piece of advice that surprises most students. A design recruiter interviewed by the same organisation in 2026 pointed out that you are often being evaluated “by a recruiter who’s never done design before, by a hiring manager who might be a PM,” and that these people “are not looking for a lesson or a quick course on what design is.” Portfolios written to impress other designers routinely miss the person actually reading them.
What a 16-year-old can genuinely do now
Concrete things, in rough order of value:
- Redesign something that annoys you. Your school’s timetable system, a local restaurant’s ordering page, a form you had to fill in. Photograph the original, explain what breaks, sketch an alternative, and — this is the part that counts — show it to five people who have to use the real thing and write down what they said.
- Learn to interview people. It is the highest-leverage skill in the field and it needs no software. Ask someone to show you how they do a task, and shut up while they do it.
- Take the mathematics anyway, if you can. It keeps the engineering door open, and it costs you nothing if you end up walking through the other one.
- Get a part-time job, any job. Nielsen Norman Group’s research on student and graduate CVs found that resumes containing more work experience — even work unrelated to the target job — were more likely to succeed.
- Write things down. Every project in your portfolio will need a story about what you tried and why. You will not remember it later.
- Look at real work. Study how a working design studio frames a project — what problem it says it was solving, what constraints it names, what it chose not to do. Reading professional case studies teaches structure faster than any tutorial, and structure is what student portfolios most often lack.
Adjacent paths worth knowing about
You may be aiming at the wrong label. A few neighbours:
Software development. BLS median $135,980, 10% projected growth to 2035 — much faster than average, and far stronger than design. Front-end work in particular sits close to design.
Product management. Worth knowing that BLS does not track it as an occupation at all, so any “product manager outlook” figure you see is a proxy for something else. It is usually not an entry-level job; people arrive from design, engineering or analysis.
Design engineering. A hybrid role — designing and building the same thing — that is growing at product companies and has no official classification yet. Vercel’s own description of the role is a good place to see what it involves.
UX research. Also untracked officially. Heavier on psychology, statistics and interviewing than on visual work.
The short version
UX and product design is a genuine profession with real pay and a slow-growing job market where the entry rung is crowded. There are two very different university routes in, and you should know which one you are aiming at by around grade 11. A design degree is not required; evidence that you can research, decide and explain is.
And the skills that everything above agrees will still matter — judgement, curiosity, the ability to talk to a stranger about their problem and actually listen — are ones you can start building this week, without a single piece of software.
